Abdominoplasty (Tummy Tuck) Combined With Body Contouring

The tummy tuck, technically known as abdominoplasty, is a popular plastic surgery procedure which is often combined with other procedures, such as the arm lift or thigh lift. The tummy tuck targets the abdominal area, producing a flatter, more toned appearance by removing excess skin and fat and often tightening the abdominal muscles.

Abdominoplasty combined with body contouring is often requested by individuals who have experienced massive weight loss whether by diet and exercise or by gastric bypass or gastric banding. It can be an ideal solution for those looking to address many issues at once. The arm lift (brachioplasty) is commonly performed with abdominoplasty to not only improve the stomach but to also tighten and firm the upper arms. The thigh lift is another popular procedure often paired with the tummy tuck for those looking to reshape the thighs and lower body for improved, smoother contours and a more proportionate look.

Board Certified Plastic Surgeon Dr. Marwan Khalifeh will be happy to meet with you for a consultation at either his Chevy Chase, or Frederick, Maryland location to discuss which procedures can safely be performed on the same day and whether or not abdominoplasty combined with body contouring is right for you. Certain factors such as the extent of surgery for each treatment area will help to determine whether the procedures can be safely combined. In general, Dr. Khalifeh likes to keep surgical times to around six hours or less to keep complications risks to a minimum.

Dr. Khalifeh performs abdominoplasty and other plastic surgery procedures at his accredited surgical center in Chevy Chase, Maryland or at Sibley Memorial Hospital of Washington, D.C., where he holds privileges. A willingness to stay in the hospital for observation can help to make combined procedures performed on the same day more possible.

General or twilight sedation is commonly used. Incisions for abdominoplasty are often located just above the pubic area between the hipbones. Through this incision Dr. Khalifeh will tighten the abdominal muscles, remove excess fat and skin, and recreate the umbilicus. For an arm lift the incisions are often made on the inside of the upper arm between the elbow and armpit. Incisions for the thigh lift can vary but are commonly located in the groin area extending to the back of the thighs. This incision may extend around the hip in order to treat the outer thigh. Through these incisions, excess fat and skin are removed to create a smoother, more toned contour.

The recovery after abdominoplasty combined with body contouring procedures is often more extensive than after abdominoplasty alone. Some swelling and bruising may result, as well as some discomfort which can be treated with pain medication. It can be helpful to have assistance at home during the first few days of your recovery. Drains may be inserted at the incision sites and these may remain in place for one to two weeks. Some patients can return to work after ten to fourteen days, though more strenuous activities should not be resumed until four to six weeks after surgery.
