Tumescent Liposuction

Tumescent liposuction, a treatment that became available in the 1980s, is a popular less invasive liposuction technique. It is primarily used to sculpt and tone troublesome areas of the body. With locations in both Chevy Chase, Maryland, and Frederick, Maryland,  Dr. M.R. Khalifeh  often uses this method in conjunction with other methods of liposuction, such as laser liposuction, Vaser™ Liposuction and fat grafting procedures. This method offers a solution for frustrating problem areas that have not responded to exercise alone.

The procedure involves the injection of a tumescent fluid to loosen the fat cells for easier removal and more precise sculpting of the body. This method offers a more controlled and effective removal of fatty tissue. The fluid not only aids in precision during the surgery, but has post-operative benefits as well. The tumescent solution has been shown to reduce pain, swelling, bleeding and bruising after surgery. Men and women who have been unsuccessful at toning a certain area of the body are the best candidates for tumescent liposuction. A consultation with Dr. Khalifeh will help to determine the best treatment option for your particular needs.

Dr. Khalifeh performs tumescent liposuction at his accredited ambulatory surgery center in Chevy Chase, Maryland. If an overnight stay is necessary, the surgery will be performed at Sibley Memorial Hospital in Washington D.C. The procedure takes between one and three hours, and may be performed under either general or local anesthetic. Incision sites vary depending on the part of the body to be treated.

Because tumescent liposuction is a gentler and generally safer method of fat removal, recovery time is shorter than for traditional liposuction. Patients need around three to five days to recover and return to work. Strenuous activity, such as exercise, must be abstained from for about two weeks.

Surgery always involves some risk, and though tumescent liposuction is a less invasive, gentler procedure than traditional liposuction, it still carries its own risk of complications.
These risks include bleeding, infection and contour irregularity.
