Laser Liposuction

Laser liposuction, also referred to as laser lipolysis, is a minimally invasive, FDA-approved body contouring procedure which uses a laser to rapidly dissolve fat in order to improve the shape of the body. The benefit of the laser is that it also tightens the surrounding skin. Furthermore, compared to traditional liposuction methods, patients experience less bleeding, swelling and bruising and quicker recovery times.

Candidates for laser lipolysis include healthy men and women who are unable to tone certain areas of the body through exercise. While the procedure may be performed on almost any area of the body, the most common treatments areas include the abdomen, flanks or love handles, neck, arms, thighs, and buttocks. There are a variety of lasers and techniques available today including SmartLipo™, CoolLipo™, Slim lipo™, and Lipotherme™ Laser Lipolysis. A consultation with Dr. Khalifeh will help you to determine the most appropriate treatment to help you meet your goals.

Dr. Khalifeh performs laser lipolysis at his accredited surgery center in Chevy Chase, Maryland, which is convenient to all Northern Virginia and metro Washington, D.C. areas. The majority of his cases are performed using Awake laser liposuction techniques in which the patient is awake but under local anesthesia with oral sedation. The procedure begins by first numbing the skin and then infusing the treatment area with a tumescent solution which numbs the fat. The laser fiber is then inserted through small, inconspicuous incisions which leave no visible scarring. The laser melts the fat while also helping to tighten the skin. In many cases, small liposuction cannulas are then used to aspirate the fat. Surgical times average one to three hours.

Recovery following laser liposuction is fairly minor and takes approximately two to four days, with most patients able to return to work after two days. Exercise may be resumed after one week. A special compression garment may need to be worn for a period of time to help minimize resultant swelling while also providing support to the new body contours. During recovery, patients may experience some fluid leakage, swelling, bruising and discomfort. Antibiotics may be prescribed and pain mediation can help to control any discomfort. Though rare, potential complications may include bleeding, infection, skin necrosis, and contour irregularity.
