Breast Reduction

Breast reduction, also known as reduction mammaplasty, is a plastic surgery procedure which reduces the size of large breasts to make them smaller, lighter and firmer. During surgery, excess fat, glandular tissue and skin are removed and the breasts are reshaped and lifted. Breast reduction can be a very rewarding procedure, improving physical pain associated with large breasts as well as emotional and social anxiety. Many women find that they enjoy a more proportionate and beautiful appearance after surgery while also being able to lead a healthier, more active and more comfortable lifestyle.

There are a variety of reasons why women seek breast reduction. Large or heavy breasts can result in back, neck or shoulder pain as well as sagging. Oversized breasts can also lead to a disproportionate body frame, restrict physical activity, and cause painful bra strap marks and rashes. If you are bothered by any of these conditions, breast reduction may be right for you. However, you may be advised to postpone surgery if you are planning to breast feed in the future.

Dr. Khalifeh may perform the breast reduction surgery at either Sibley Memorial Hospital where he holds privileges or at the Surgery Center of Chevy Chase, Maryland. Surgical times average three to four hours and general anesthesia is commonly used. While there are several possible techniques for breast reduction, the most common procedure involve an anchor-shaped incision which circles the areola, extends downward in a vertical line, then runs horizontally following the natural curve beneath the breast. Working through this incision, Dr. Khalifeh will remove excess glandular tissue, fat and skin, then reposition the nipple and areola to a higher position. In some cases, liposuction alone may be used to reduce the size of the breasts and this can be determine during the initial consultation.

During the first few days after your breast reduction surgery, you will need to rest and limit your arm movements. Bandages will be applied immediately after surgery as well as a specialized surgical bra that will need to be worn for several weeks. You may experience some minor pain or discomfort which can be treated with oral medication. Some swelling and bruising may also result.  A drain may be used to collect fluid.   Stitches are typically removed after one to two weeks. Patients are often able to return to non-strenuous work within one week after their breast reduction, however more strenuous activities and exercise will need to be postponed for several weeks.

Breast reduction produces some of the quickest changes in body image, creating a better proportioned body and an enhanced appearance while also providing freedom from physical pain and allowing one to enjoy a greater variety of clothing.
