Breast Lift

The breast lift, also known as mastopexy, is a surgical procedure which raises and rejuvenates the breasts to a more elevated and youthful position. The breast lift can improve sagging cause caused by aging and gravity, restore firmness that has been lost through pregnancy and breast feeding, realign nipples and/or areolas that point downward or to the side, and restore an overall more youthful appearance. The breast lift can also be combined with the insertion of breast implants, a procedure known as augmentation mastopexy, for additional volume and cleavage.

Dr. Khalifeh performs breast lift procedures at one of two locations: either in a surgery center such as the Chevy Chase Surgery Center of Chevy Chase, Maryland, or in a hospital where he holds privileges such as Sibley Memorial Hospital in Washington, D.C. The surgery takes approximately three hours to complete and is performed with general anesthesia.

Dr. Khalifeh’s preferred breast lift technique is the vertical pattern/superior medial pedicle approach. This provides a lasting lift while also minimizing the appearance of the scar. The incision is made around the areola and then continues downward in a vertical line. Unlike a traditional breast lift incision, the horizontal incision beneath the breast is shortened or eliminated. Working through the incision, Dr. Khalifeh will remove excess skin and parenchyma and move the nipple and areola to a higher position before reshaping the breast and closing the incision.

While the breast lift is often performed on an outpatient basis, an overnight stay can be arranged if the patient prefers. During the first few days, patients will need to take it easy and limit their arm movements. A special surgical bra is typically worn for several weeks after surgery, though patients can choose to wear a sports bra after the first week. Some minor pain or discomfort may result but this can be treated with oral medication. Patients may also experience some degree of swelling and bruising. Stitches are generally removed after one to two weeks. Our patients are often able to return to non-strenuous work within five days of the breast lift, however more strenuous activity and exercise will need to be postponed for three to four weeks.
