Breast implants can come in two basic shapes: round or teardrop, also called anatomical or contoured. Anatomical breast implants are shaped more like natural breasts. The implant has a top and bottom to it, and is elliptical rather than being symmetrical like the round implant. This design provides a gentler slope from the flat upper chest and a more natural looking breast. The teardrop retains its contoured shape even when lying down, which may appear unnatural on some women. In the standing position, all implants actually take on a teardrop shape due to gravity. Many surgeons prefer the round implant because there is less risk of a misshapen breast if the implant shifts. Many women choose the round implant for greater lift, fullness and cleavage. It is also less expensive than the teardrop. The teardrop must be textured rather than smooth to prevent rotation of the breast as the breast will become distorted in appearance if the teardrop implant rotates.
The teardrop shaped implant benefits women who have droopy or tuberous breasts. As it will slightly elevate the nipple into a more forward position. The implant would be placed subglandular in this case. Some women do not want fullness in the upper part of their breasts and teardrop implants are designed for this. This is a very personal decision. In general, however, most women prefer more fullness in the upper part of the breasts.
Breast implants routinely used by Dr. Khalifeh include the Mentor and the Allergan Natrelle™ Implant Styles, which are both FDA approved. The variety of implant styles will be discussed during your consultation with Dr. Khalifeh at either his Frederick, Maryland or Chevy Chase, Maryland locations. Should you elect to have the teardrop shaped implants, Dr. Khalifeh will discuss the advantages and disadvantages.
Augmentation surgery takes place in Dr. Khalifeh’s accredited surgical center in Chevy Chase under general or twilight sedation. If the Sibley Memorial Hospital in Washington, D.C. is more convenient, Dr. Khalifeh holds privileges there as well. Breast augmentation surgery using teardrop shaped implants lasts one hour and an overnight stay is not necessary. It is best to take at least three to four days off of work. The recovery time is one week and stitches are removed at that time. Another two weeks are necessary before strenuous activity may be resumed. Possible but rare complications include bleeding, infection, implant rupture, rotation, capsular contracture and risks associated with anesthesia.
