What new mother hasn’t been shocked to see the changes that motherhood has imposed on her body? The stretch marks formed during pregnancy often look worse after delivery, a fatty abdomen appears out of nowhere and there is a significant change in the shape and size (and often altitude) of breasts.   The changes that were created by giving birth to our children are out of our control, and often exercising will not be enough to bring us back to the way we used to be. The mommy makeover takes place in Dr. Khalifeh’s accredited surgical center in Chevy Chase, Maryland under general or twilight sedation.  If the Sibley Memorial Hospital in Washington, D.C. is more convenient, Dr. Khalifeh holds privileges there as well.  The combined procedures will take 4-6 hours and an overnight stay is common with multiple procedures. Recovery time is 1-2 weeks with a return to work after two weeks for most women. Breast stitches and the first drain for the tummy tuck are removed after one week. The second drain is removed after two weeks.   Strenuous activity should not be resumed until one month after surgery.   If a smoker, smoking should cease several weeks before the surgery to improve the blood supply to the tissues. Potential complications may include infection, excessive bleeding, thick scar formation, capsular contracture (hardening of the implant with formation of scar tissue), numbness of the nipple, deflation or rupture of the implant, implant displacement, risks associated with anesthesia plus an increased risk of thromboembolism (blood clot).  For this reason, all patients undergoing a mommy makeover procedure are placed on Lovenox, a blood thinner very effective in reducing that particular risk.  By following these steps, the surgery can be made very safe.
