Breast Augmentation

For many modern women, breasts are an integral aspect of the feminine appeal and enhancement is often desired. Women may choose breast augmentation for a variety of reasons: breasts are perceived to be too small, women are looking for a fuller profile, breasts are asymmetrical in size, breasts have changed due to weight loss or pregnancy, or breasts need reconstruction following mastectomy. A woman may feel that her body is not correctly proportioned. For whatever reason, it is possible to enhance the breasts using different surgical techniques ranging from the placement of an implant in the breast area to transferring fat from the body to the breast. These procedures require an experienced Board Certified plastic surgeon such as Dr. Marwan Khalifeh. Breast augmentation is one of the most commonly performed procedures in Dr. Khalifeh’s practice.

Breast and Body solutions offers comprehensive treatment options to address the specific needs of women in the Frederick, and Chevy Chase, Maryland areas and beyond. The most popular breast augmentation surgery, also known as augmentation mammaplasty, is the placement of an implant, either saline or silicone. However, there has been emerging demand for natural autologous fat based breast enhancement. With this procedure, fat is removed from the abdomen or thighs and processed. It is then injected into the breasts to provide a smooth, natural shape. Breast augmentation surgery lasts for one to two hours. General anesthesia or twilight sedation is used. When using general anesthesia, the patient is completely unconscious through a combination of inhaled and injected medication. With twilight anesthesia, the patient is sedated but not unconscious.  This type of sedation may be called IV sedation or conscious sedation and the drugs used are similar to those used for general anesthesia but in lower doses.  A local anesthetic is used on the area receiving the surgical procedure and the patient is sedated but not entirely asleep. With twilight anesthesia, the patient does not remember the procedure.

Recovery from breast enhancement surgery is usually three days, after which the patient can return to work. Stitches are removed one week after surgery and strenuous activity may be resumed after two to three weeks.  Potential complications depend on the technique chosen and are discussed underneath each section in greater detail. Details about any of the procedures may be obtained during a consultation with Dr. Khalifeh.
